Gurudwara Pathar Sahib is a revered Sikh shrine located around 25 kilometers from Leh on the Leh–Kargil road. Built in 1517 to commemorate the visit of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, this gurudwara holds deep spiritual and historical significance. According to local legend, Guru Nanak was meditating in the area when a demon tried to harm him by pushing a large rock down the hill. The rock is believed to have softened on touching the Guru’s body, leaving an imprint, which is preserved inside the shrine today. Maintained by the Indian Army, the gurudwara stands peacefully amidst Ladakh’s rugged mountains, welcoming visitors of all faiths.

Visitors can offer prayers inside the main prayer hall and view the sacred rock that carries the imprint associated with Guru Nanak. Spending a few quiet moments here brings a sense of calm and reflection. You can also partake in the langar (community meal), which is served to all visitors as a symbol of equality and service. The surrounding landscape offers beautiful views of the mountains and river valleys, making it a serene stop during a road trip from Leh. Many travelers combine this visit with Magnetic Hill and the Indus–Zanskar confluence nearby.

Cover your head before entering the gurudwara, as per Sikh traditions, and remove your shoes at the entrance. Maintain silence and respectful behavior inside the premises. Photography may be restricted in certain areas, so follow the guidelines provided. The gurudwara is easily accessible by road, and it is best visited during the daytime. Carry light woolens, as the weather can change quickly in Ladakh. Most importantly, respect the religious significance of the place and keep the surroundings clean.
