Tips

Bangus Valley (also spelled Bungus) is a high-altitude meadowland in Kupwara district, north Kashmir, lying west of Handwara. It’s known for wide, bowl-shaped green pastures, pine/conifer forests on the edges, and a “no-crowds, just vibes” kind of calm—more nature escape than commercial hill station.

The landscape is commonly described as two main sections: Bodh Bangus (Big Bangus) and Lokut Bangus (Small Bangus), spread across a large meadow zone (often cited around ~300 sq km) at roughly ~3,012 m (~10,000 ft) elevation.

The main thing here is to slow-walk the meadows—Bodh Bangus and Lokut Bangus are perfect for long, easy strolls, laid-back picnics, and the kind of landscape photography where every frame looks like a wallpaper. If you like simple adventure, you can do short hikes to nearby ridgelines/viewpoints for wider valley panoramas and catch the light changes across the grasslands.

Bangus is also great for nature-spotting: the mix of grassland + forest edges makes it a solid place for birdwatching and watching local wildlife signs (early mornings and late afternoons are usually the most active). Even if you’re not “a wildlife person,” you’ll still enjoy the quiet—this place is basically an anti-noise playlist.

Plan your timing smartly: Bangus is most comfortably visited from late spring through early autumn when roads are generally open and the meadows are green (many travelers target May–September/October). Weather flips fast at this altitude, so carry a warm layer and rain protection even if Srinagar feels fine.

For logistics, most routes go via Handwara or Kupwara (local taxis are common), and the drive from Srinagar is often noted around ~125–130 km / ~4–5 hours depending on road and stops. Facilities can be limited once you’re inside the meadow area, so carry cash, water/snacks, and keep your fuel topped up—Bangus doesn’t care about your low-battery lifestyle. Also, since it’s a sensitive region, keep a government ID handy for routine checks.
