Tips

Shalimar Bagh is the largest and most celebrated Mughal garden in Srinagar, built in 1619 by Emperor Jahangir for his wife Nur Jahan. Located along the eastern side of Dal Lake, this garden is a perfect example of Mughal landscape architecture inspired by Persian design principles. It is laid out in a series of terraces with flowing water channels, elegant fountains, carved stone pavilions, and shaded pathways lined with majestic chinar trees. The garden was once used as a royal retreat and a place for court gatherings, and even today it reflects timeless elegance and symmetry. With the Zabarwan hills in the background and beautifully arranged flower beds in the foreground, Shalimar Bagh truly feels like a royal paradise.

Visitors can stroll through the three main terraces of the garden, each historically reserved for different royal purposes. The central water channel, known as the Shah Nahar, runs through the garden and feeds numerous fountains that create a soothing atmosphere. One of the highlights is the black marble pavilion in the upper terrace, where the emperor once held private meetings. Photography enthusiasts will love capturing the reflections of fountains and chinar trees, especially during autumn when the leaves turn golden and red. Relaxing on the lawns, enjoying the peaceful setting, and simply soaking in the historical aura are among the most rewarding experiences here.

The best time to visit Shalimar Bagh is from April to October when the flowers are blooming and the fountains are fully functional. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for a quieter experience and better lighting for photos. Wear comfortable footwear as the garden involves walking across multiple terraces. During autumn, expect stunning chinar foliage but also slightly cooler temperatures, so carry a light layer. Combine your visit with nearby attractions like Nishat Bagh and a Shikara ride on Dal Lake to make the day more fulfilling and well-planned.
